Engineering Drawings

Engineering drawings are used by engineers to communicate with manufacturers when ordering physical components and products to be made. They generally show a front and side view of the product with annotations of critical dimensions. There is also generally a notes section in a corner of the drawing for communication important details to the manufacturer that may not have a visual representation in the drawing, such as a material specification. It is common for engineers to make a CAD model of the product, and then generate an engineering drawing from their CAD model. Many software programs allow engineers to do this, including Solidworks, NX, and OnShape. Engineering drawings are a great visual communication tool for design engineers to quickly discuss important details with manufacturers such as the size of stock material needed to create the components, the fabrication method, which dimensions are most important, and evaluating dimensional tolerances.
